About Freiburg: Atmosphere

Many people who came to visit me thought that Freiburg was going to be a quaint little town overloaded with cuckoo clocks and Lederhosen. Even I had no idea what to expect until I arrived there. Freiburg is actually a small city, bustling but not too busy and still traditional. The city is quite modern, with a sophisticated tram system, plenty of bike lanes, and many modern buildings. Freiburg is nestled between the mountains of the Black Forest, a little hub of activity among the vast landscape. Freiburg is by no means old-fashioned, but does still maintain a bit of its medieval charm. It is certainly not dead on the weekends, as many families go for walks around the city on their days off. Many Germans (students and adults) go home for lunch so even the middle of the work day is filled with energy. Freiburg is similar to Amherst in that it is centered around the university.

Vauban is a French, eco-friendly neighborhood of Freiburg. It has a more rural feel to it than downtown Freiburg and StuSie, so I like to go there every once in a while to go for walks. The apartments there are also really interesting and I would highly recommend checking them out, as most utilize solar energy.
